I never thought of this question. I don’t think our parents ever thought of this question. Did you ever think about this question? How to talk to kids about Sex?

When I heard that there was going to be a talk about this in my church, I took the opportunity. With the recent incidents of Nurin, and thereafter, news of kids being molested keep popping out in the newspapers, I felt that I better equip myself with this knowledge on how to tell my kids about sex.

It was a very good, funny, sensitive and informative talk, given by Michael Lee from Scripture Union. All the Sunday School kids were encouraged to sit in to listen as well.

He started telling us about Aliens coming to planet Earth, and abducted a large number of people into their spaceship. The aliens which were all scientists, tried to think of the best way to divide these so called Humans into 2 groups. First, they tried to divide them by those who have short hair and long hair. It didn’t work so well. Then they tried to divide them by those who wear glasses and those who don’t. It didn’t work so well either. Then they noticed that one group had something that the other doesn’t. The scientists separated them by the “things” which this group that the the other don’t have. And it worked really well!

Michael continued to ask the kids what group did the aliens separate them into? All the kids were pretty smart, they answered, male and female… applause applause…

Next, there were drawings of 2 gingerbread men on the whiteboard. He called a boy volunteer up. Guess what Michael asked the boy to draw? Something that a male has that the female doesn’t have. The boy’s face turned red and you can imagine how embarrased he was. The boy couldn’t get himself to draw it, so Michael drew it for him. All the kids went crazy!!! They went… ARGGHHH…. EEEEEEE…. and all the little boys hid their faces behind the chairs. Somehow, Michael only drew a sausage like thing. And he asked the kids, what is missing, the boys went crazy again!…. The volunteer couldn’t get himself to draw the missing thing, so Michael had to draw it for him again. So, he drew bag like things under the sausage. And all the kids went into a frenzy!!! Even us adults here were laughing like anything looking at the reaction of the kids.

Now comes the female gingerbread figure. He asked the boy volunteer since he can’t draw the male parts, draw the “things” that female has that male doesn’t have. All the kids went into another frenzy! Well… the boy embarrasingly drew a line at the bottom part. And Michael said you’re right! But there’s another thing which girls have and boys don’t have. The boy embarrassingly drew 2 circles with dots in the middle. This time the adults went into mad laughters!

This was not the end of this biology lesson. Michael continued to lable these “things”. The males “things” as a penis and scrotum. The females “things” as vagina and breasts. He asked the kids to repeat these words. He strictly told the parents to teach their kids the right names of these body parts. Don’t go and teach your kids names like ti ti, tu tu or ta ta.

Private Zones

Private zones are only parts where you, your parents, and doctors can touch, for hygiene purposes. No one else can touch them. If someone do, say NO, GO AWAY and tell someone you trust about it.

He later taught about safe and unsafe touches which I think is very informative. Unsafe touches can be touched by the eyes and words as well, like somebody looking at you in a very funny way and say that you’re pretty… etc. He showed examples which the kids could relate to.

So parents and future parents, teach your kids about sex. Teach them the right names and respect their body parts. Because we are all beautifully and wonderfully made by God!
